HTC wants to be ‘careful’ with its smartwatch, still ‘working on it’ says CEO Peter Chou

The HTC smartwatch—specifically one running Android Wear—has been rumored for a long time now. In fact, many were expecting the Taiwanese company to introduce it at the company’s press event a couple days ago. Obviously that didn’t happen, and the company instead told us about another wearable—its GRIP fitness tracker. Don’t be too worried, though, because HTC has told CNET that they’re still working on their smartwatch; they just want to be careful to get it right.

“We try to be very careful instead of just putting out whatever, so we keep working on it,” Chou told CNET at HTC’s Mobile World Congress booth. HTC has seemingly been working on their device for a long time, as CNET reported last year that the company was planning on releasing their first smartwatch in “early 2015”. That hasn’t happened yet, but it wouldn’t be ridiculous to say that the company very well may have been planning on unveiling their first Android Wear watch this week (or maybe even sooner).

Google announced HTC as an Android Wear partner in early 2014, alongside several other names (that did indeed go on to launch Android Wear devices last year). HTC, while they were definitely on the list, notably has yet to enter the arena…

If nothing else, this is direct confirmation that HTC is indeed still working on a smartwatch. There’s no telling when it will come as HTC originally said that it was working on having one ready for the end of last year (and Google’s page corroborated this), but it’s clear that the Taiwanese company still plans on launching one at some point. Notably, if they wait much longer, they’re going to have to compete directly with the Apple Watch.
