Qualcomm’s smartwatch now available for pre-order…or just buy a Nexus 5

Look, don’t get me wrong as I’m totally on board with wearables and smartwatches as a new part of the industry. However, I’m still having trouble swallowing Qualcomm’s $349 price tag even if they promise a significantly better display…

The reality is, at that price, I can only really encourage you to go buy a Nexus 5 and get far more value for your money. You may not even need the Nexus 5, but in the grand scheme, the resale value will likely be higher and you get so much more value out of it. That’s not to say the Toq and it’s 1.5″ Mirasol always-on display is a bad thing, it isn’t. In fact, some of the technology Qualcomm has incorporated actually sounds pretty awesome…until you look at the price tag.

If Qualcomm wasn’t up against the likes of the $149 Pebble, $299 Galaxy Gear and even the mythical Apple “iWatch”, it might fare pretty well. When you consider the current state of the smartwatch market, Qualcomm just seems out of touch price-wise. Still, the company seems focused on the developers with the Toq and maybe, just maybe, they can sell it to them on the promise that they can tinker and tweak to their heart’s content. Not to mention the Toq will work with any brand of Android device, and not suffer the same limitations of the Galaxy Gear.

Let’s just hypothetically say you have an extra $349 lying around for a device: Are you going to pick the smartwatch or the Nexus 5?
