If you’ve been in the market for a powerful new smartphone, today’s the day to take the plunge. Verizon Wireless this morning released three new Android handsets, Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play, Motorola’s Droid X2, LG’s Revolution and HTC’s Trophy. The big red carrier has been teasing the Xperia Play with an aggressive marketing campaign.
It involved the supposedly stolen cargo of devices and actress Kristen Schaal starring television commercials full of foul language and sexual innuendos (see the below video). The Gingerbread-driven $200 Xperia Play runs select PlayStation One games and has the handy physical PlayStation buttons that slide out underneath its four-inch display. This 4.3-inch device sports beefed up internals that bring the Droid brand up to date with today’s specs. This includes a speedy dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 processor and an eight-megapixel camera with HD video capture. The $200 handset comes with Android 2.2 pre-installed, to be updated to Android 2.3 Gingerbread. The 4G LTE-enabled Revolution has a 4.3-inch touchscreen interface on top of Froyo and costs $250. Possible deal breaker? It comes preloaded with Microsoft’s Bing search engine. For you Windows Phone 7 fans out there (**crickets**) HTC’s Trophy arrives as Verizon’s first-ever Windows Phone. It’s a solid handset with a 3.8-inch display, a five-megapixel camera with 720p video capture and global roaming, retailing for $150. All four phones introduced today require a new two-year service agreement for voice and data.
